The New Zealand Warriors have confirmed the transfer of forward Mitch Barnett to the Brisbane Broncos, marking a notable player swap that includes Grant Anderson moving in the opposite direction.
Negotiations between the two clubs have extended over several weeks, sparked by Barnett's release from the Warriors, which was granted on compassionate grounds.
Initially, the Warriors had not disclosed their intention, but ultimately they decided they wanted compensation in the form of a player.
Anderson has been identified as that player, with News Corp reporting that he will join the Warriors under a three-year contract that lasts from 2027 to 2029.
The agreement for Anderson is expected to be valued at around $400,000 per season.
Previously with the Melbourne Storm, Anderson is versatile, capable of playing either wing or centre, but has faced challenges in securing consistent game time throughout his career.
Although he was considered for selection at Melbourne, he had initially missed out for the Broncos this year, ultimately filling in for Gehamat Shibasaki, only to be sidelined due to injury after his first match this season, which could keep him out for another two months.
Despite the limitations on his season, the Warriors remain optimistic about his potential, particularly after being unsuccessful in acquiring Antonio Verhoeven.
Anderson will be vying for game minutes, although the recent signing of Alofiana Khan-Pereira and the upcoming addition of Will Warbrick raise questions about his future playing time.
