Last year, Marty Taupau was dismissed by the Broncos for 'liking' a video from Elijah Taylor that criticized coach Michael Maguire. Ironically, it was Walsh who informed Taupau about his actions after Taupau claimed he had not watched the video.
On Wednesday, people began to draw parallels between the situations of Taupau and Walsh, questioning if the star fullback would face similar consequences. Maguire clarified to reporters that the two cases are "two different scenarios" and assured that Walsh's $1.1 million annual contract would remain intact.
"I spoke to Reece this morning and we went through it," Maguire said. "I understand there's a like there on social media but we've had the conversation and he (Walsh) realizes that things move quickly on social media. But yeah, different circumstances.
"I'm not going to go into that. We move forward now and Reece and I have had that conversation."
While Walsh avoided being sacked, The Courier Mail reports that he may still face scrutiny. Broncos officials will discuss his situation and may ask him to meet with the leadership group, similar to Taupau. Additionally, he could face a fine for a 'conduct breach.' "Walsh will not be sacked by the Broncos but is facing possible sanctions," the report notes.
The Broncos have recently addressed Walsh's social media behavior, particularly after a controversial video surfaced last year where he was seen punching a friend while boxing and later drinking from a new toilet.
Following those incidents, veteran commentator Adam Hawse advised the Broncos to restrict Walsh's social media presence. "If we're giving out advice, Broncos, I'll give you some advice - get Reece off social media," Hawse said on 2GB radio.
"It's that simple. It's been described as bizarre - that's being kind, I think. We laugh at it, but I certainly hope kids didn't watch that and take that advice."
Walsh currently boasts the largest social media following of any player in the NRL, and his personal brand is surpassing that of the Broncos.
