Walters puts Australia's World Cup first

Australia confirm 23-man Rugby League World Cup squad

Kevin Walters will join English Super League club St. Helens after the World Cup, but his attention is firmly on Australia's campaign.

Asked whether future Kangaroos planning influenced selection, including Reece Walsh's prospects at fullback as James Tedesco and Dylan Edwards age, Walters said: "No, I'm not concerned with next year with the Kangaroos… this World Cup is my only concern and focus,"

Speaking on the Inside Ball podcast from the team's Brisbane camp, he reflected on Australia's 24-22 opening win over New Zealand ahead of its Week 2 match against Fiji.

Walters said New Zealand had no weak performers and Australia was fortunate to finish ahead after an intense match that could have gone either way.

He expects the teams to meet again, a rematch that under the 2026 tournament format could only happen in the final on November 15.

Walters praised Australia's defence but said its attack was clunky after limited preparation. He said the coaching staff were working to bring the team's individual talent together more smoothly.

Although he considers Australia and New Zealand favourites, Walters said the competition remains open, pointing to Tonga and Samoa's Week 1 performances.

He expects Australia to keep improving before Sunday's match at Suncorp Stadium.
