Walker contract row shadows Kangaroos selection

Kevin Walters during training and Sam Walker speaks to the media.

Latrell Mitchell's absence from Australia's team to face the Cook Islands has prompted questions about the Kangaroos' left-edge and centre selections.

Coach Kevin Walters named Kotoni Staggs and Bradman Best, despite expectations that Mitchell would start on the left, with either Staggs or Best on the right.

The choices have led fans to wonder whether Staggs and Best are competing for one spot, or Mitchell has fallen behind them.

Walters also selected Tom Dearden at No.7, a possible indication he will partner Cameron Munster in the World Cup semi-final.

Dearden and Sam Walker both played in the halves against Fiji, but Australia's 36-22 win was underwhelming.

Walker had been expected by many to lead the team after guiding the Roosters to an NRL premiership weeks earlier.

His selection was in the spotlight after the Roosters withdrew a major contract extension offer on Monday night, following failed talks.

Reports suggested Walker might leave the club next season, with Brisbane and other teams linked to the halfback.

Walters said the contract situation did not influence his choice; he wanted to give Dearden a chance at No.7.

"Their managers are the ones who are looking into it. The players get updates, so they're not really talking directly with clubs or coaches, and even if they are, it's all part and parcel of being a rugby league player. I don't see it being difficult or that much of a sideshow."
