Wakefield's unlikely title bid after relegation

Aussie’s incredible title double as Wakefield stun Warrington in Super League grand final

Tyson Smoothy has become only the second player to win NRL and Super League titles in consecutive years, and the first to do so since 2005.

He won with Brisbane Broncos last season and has now celebrated with Wakefield Trinity, before joining Perth Bears on a three-year deal for their inaugural NRL campaign next year.

Wakefield defeated Sam Burgess' Warrington Wolves 23-10 at Old Trafford to claim their first top-flight title in 58 years and their first in the Super League era.

Smoothy's achievement matches Ben Harris, who won with Canterbury Bulldogs in 2004 and Bradford Bulls in 2005.

"Quite surreal at the moment to be honest," Smoothy told Sky Sports post-match.

"I'm so proud of the club. I've heard so much about where they've come from and Matt (owner Matt Ellis) has done such a great job to get the club here. Everyone played such a big role and just proud of the boys' effort today.

"It makes it easier (to leave) knowing we've had a successful year and brought the club a trophy, but it makes it hard to leave the boys. Such a close group and I'm going to miss them. It's going to be tough."

Wakefield were relegated in 2023 and returned to Super League last year, yet finished fourth before winning the title.

They are the sixth club to win Super League, joining Wigan Warriors, St Helens, Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls and Hull KR.
