Wakefield's Smoothy Chases Historic Double

Wakefield Trinity have completed a rapid rise from the second tier to Super League champions, beating Warrington 23-10 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The fourth-placed side secured their first title in 58 years, two seasons after promotion, with a 19-0 half-time lead and four tries.

Australian hooker Tyson Smoothy played his farewell match for Wakefield before returning home to join the Perth Bears, having received permission to leave on compassionate family grounds.

Named Wakefield's player of the year, he helped the Brisbane Broncos win the NRL title last year and became only the second player to claim both competitions in consecutive seasons.

Ben Harris, the Australian centre who played for Bradford and the Bulldogs, achieved the same feat in 2004 and 2005.

"Quite surreal at the moment, to be honest," beamed the 27-year-old.

"Just proud of the boys' efforts today. Winning makes it easier, but also harder.

"Easier because you know it's been a successful year and you've pulled a trophy but, yeah, it makes it harder to leave such a close group - and I'm going to miss it."

Smoothy also produced a 40/20 kick as Wakefield took control early.

Lachlan Walmsley's reverse pass set up Cam Scott's 11th-minute try, while Isaiah Vagana and Jazz Tevaga also scored before the break.

Warrington, coached by Sam Burgess, fought back through two Arron Lindop tries, but player of the match Tom Johnstone scored the decisive try.

Wakefield could next target the World Club Challenge against the winner of Sunday's NRL grand final between the Sydney Roosters and Newcastle Knights.

Walmsley, a NSW-born Scotland international and free agent, joked on Sky Sports: "Yeah, so I'm looking for a job, if there's anyone needing a winger - a grand final-winning winger!"

Burgess said: "We're going home disappointed that we lost the physical battle early,"
