Sydney Roosters' Toia caught between nations

NRL Rd 1 – Roosters v Broncos

The 2026 Rugby League World Cup opens on October 15 with Australia facing New Zealand at Allianz Stadium.

The Daily Telegraph reported both nations received Toia's commitment, but neither has pressed him while he focuses on the Grand Final; his choice remains unsettled.

Toia played for Tonga in 2025, his second NRL season, after winning the Dally M Rookie of the Year award.

His defence and partnership with Mark Nawaqanitawase have established him as a leading NRL centre.

Walters was due to name Australia's squad Monday, with Toia, Kotoni Staggs, Bradman Best and Latrell Mitchell among the centre contenders.

Jack Bostock and Tom Trbojevic are also options, with Trbojevic likely considered on the wing.

James Tedesco is favoured at fullback after Dylan Edwards suffered a PCL injury and was set for knee surgery; Reece Walsh is expected back after ankle surgery.

Sam Walker and Mitchell Moses are in contention at halfback after Nathan Cleary recently underwent a second operation, this time on his right foot.

Reece Robson and Lindsay Collins are also under consideration.
