Sydney Roosters pull Walker extension offer

David Riccio told SEN radio that the Perth Bears may be the only club able to meet Sam Walker's salary expectations for 2027.

Coach Mal Meninga could use a player of Walker's quality, Riccio said, as Perth has yet to secure an inaugural marquee star.

The Roosters withdrew a reported $4.2 million extension offer on Monday after their billionaire chairman became frustrated by negotiations.

News Corp reported the club believed Walker had accepted a three-year deal worth $1.4 million annually, before his representatives sought a small upgrade.

Walker, 24, is contracted through 2027, and the Roosters would let him see out his deal.

However, News Corp reported the club would also release him now if he found a rival contract for next season, and would not restart extension talks.

Agent Clinton Schifcofske said Walker still preferred to remain at the Roosters.

"You can always come back to the table, but I can't speak for Sam," Schifcofske told News Corp. "We've had chats and discussions back and forth. Both sides haven't been able to agree to terms and that happens."

Brisbane was linked with Walker, who came through its academy and has a father and two uncles who played for the club.

Yet News Corp said the Broncos had ruled out signing him. Maroons great Paul 'Fatty' Vautin said Walker would welcome a move there.

"If they made a play for him, I think he'd love to go there," Vautin said on James Hooper's Rugby League Insider podcast. "Growing up, all Sam wanted to do was play for the Broncos... and mate, they need a halfback."

The Broncos have signed Jonah Pezet and have Tom Duffy competing for the No.7 role following Adam Reynolds' retirement.

The PNG Chiefs are another possible destination, but they do not enter the NRL until 2028, leaving Walker needing a 2027 deal elsewhere or at the Roosters.
