Sydney Roosters face Tupou-shaped void

Daniel Tupou.

Daniel Tupou leaves the NRL with 198 tries from 307 games, placing him second on the all-time try-scoring list.

The Sydney Roosters winger also belongs to the 57-player group to have reached 300 appearances.

After weighing up his future for months, Tupou announced his retirement following the Roosters' 2026 premiership victory over Newcastle in Sunday's grand final.

He won four titles with the club, in 2013, 2018, 2019 and 2026, and spent almost 15 years there as a one-club player.

"To have played my whole NRL career at one Club means a lot to me." Tupou said.

His exit compounds roster concerns: Mark Nawaqanitawase will head back to rugby union for 2027, while Daly Cherry-Evans is leaving for Hull FC.

The Roosters have signed Reuben Garrick for next season but missed out on reported target Murray Taulagi, who is also heading to rugby union.

Tupou and Nawaqanitawase formed a major wing threat, and their departures leave the defending premiers facing an experience gap at Bondi Junction.
