Ricky Stuart, coach of Canberra, has publicly supported his close friend Craig Bellamy following the latter's recent diagnosis of an unidentified neurological degenerative condition.
Despite this troubling news, Bellamy will continue his role with the Melbourne Storm, as the club announced last night that the 66-year-old successfully underwent tests leading to the diagnosis.
Melbourne opted not to disclose any further details regarding the specific nature of the diagnosis.
Stuart and Bellamy share a long-standing friendship, having played together for the Raiders during the late 1980s and early 1990s, culminating in their grand final victory over Penrith in 1990.
Their bond remains strong today, highlighted most recently when the Raiders triumphed over the Storm 26-22 on April 17.
Ahead of their round seven match-up, Stuart praised Bellamy as the top coach in the modern era, expressing his deep respect for him.
When asked about Bellamy's health, Stuart revealed he became aware of his friend's situation three to four weeks ago.
"I know he's getting very good advice (and) got good people around him … in Melbourne," Stuart stated.
"He's got a beautiful family, so it's now time for Craig to really care about Craig and put himself first."
