Queensland Maroons head coach Billy Slater has hinted that his position might be uncertain moving forward.
Interestingly, discussions about Slater's future gained momentum prior to the 2026 series decider more than they do now.
He mentioned he wouldn't commit to any new contracts with the QRL beyond the one set to expire this year but later clarified that he would work under a handshake agreement as long as he felt he was suited for the role.
The Maroons suffered their second series loss in three years last Wednesday at Suncorp Stadium, with both defeats coming on home turf during Slater's five-year tenure as head coach.
Adding to the speculation surrounding his future is the fact that the Melbourne Storm may be seeking a new head coach in the near future.
There have long been rumors linking Slater to that position, with the club actively interested; however, he might not want the demands of a full-time NRL coaching role.
"Not sure yet. I think I'll just let the dust settle and sit down with the right people and make that decision," Slater said when prompted by Andrew Johns, who has also been rumored for the NSW job.
"There's a lot of work that goes into it, and it's a feeling thing. The reason I jumped into that position is because it meant the world to me, and it still does."
