Shirvington Joins Cronulla Sharks as Sprint Coach

Matt Shirvington, one of Australia's fastest athletes, has been appointed as a sprint coach for the Cronulla Sharks, aiming for the 2026 season.

Since the start of preseason, the Olympian has been working with the NRL team to enhance player speed across the board. The Sharks recognize that the modern fast-paced style of Rugby League can greatly benefit from having nimble forwards, leading to improved performance on the scoreboard.

Shirvington was pleasantly surprised by the players' speed, commenting to Sharks Media that he has witnessed some of the best speed in the NRL.

"The guys are moving really well - they're super fast from a standing start right through to top speed. They're looking really good," Shirvington said.

He also noted their agility, saying, "Arguably the best team I've seen in the way that they move around the field. They're very impressive at the moment."

Previously, Shirvington had connections with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the St George Illawarra Dragons, which facilitated his move to the Sharks.

With a focus on adapting to the modern game, particular emphasis has been placed on improving the Sharks' forward pack, with commendations directed towards both the senior players and those in crucial positions.

"And then some of the older boys move well on the field too. Will Kennedy, when he's up and running, Sam Stonestreet as well, he's got a beautiful stride once he gets going," Shirvington noted.
