In a significant change to the finals landscape, the NRL has mandated that the Cronulla Sharks will host the North Queensland Cowboys at Allianz Stadium rather than their traditional home, Shark Park.
This decision comes after the ARL Commission revised regulations that previously allowed clubs to hold the opening week of finals at their home grounds. Concerns regarding the limited 15,000-seat capacity of Shark Park and its potential financial impact on the NRL guided this policy shift.
An official communication to clubs at the season's onset emphasized: "For all NRL finals matches, the ARL Commission reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to determine venues considered most suitable." This new directive aims to enhance fan experience and ensure sufficient attendance at finals matches.
Allianz Stadium, with a capacity of 42,500, is also set to host the Rabbitohs versus Knights match on Friday night. Meanwhile, other matches include the Warriors facing the Dolphins in Auckland and the Panthers against the Roosters at CommBank Stadium.
Sharks captain Cameron McInnes expressed frustration over the abrupt rule change. He stated in July, "You can't just change the rule book just because it suits you at the time," and reiterated his belief that home finals should be played at Shark Park, regardless of rankings.
McInnes concluded by acknowledging the fluidity of NRL rules: "The NRL changes rules all the time... So as a player, you just have to adapt." Sharks CEO Dino Mezzatesta noted that the Cowboys are unlikely to draw a large traveling crowd, potentially leaving Allianz Stadium less than full.
The decision has sparked debate among fans, with many supporting the Sharks as they navigate this challenging adjustment in their finals campaign.
