In a significant development for the Parramatta Eels, their forward Junior Paulo has yet to finalize a contract for 2027, though negotiations appear to be advancing.
Reports from News Corp indicate that Paulo's potential move to the Perth Bears fell through, which would have marked his transfer to Mal Meninga's new team in Western Australia.
Despite undergoing minor knee surgery that sidelined him for a portion of the season, Paulo remains a vital asset on the field at 32 years old.
Eels coach Jason Ryles addressed Paulo's future as the team prepared for their concluding match against the Dragons. He stated, "We'll know a little more in the coming weeks. Junior is super important for us in terms of experience in the middle third of the field; we are quite young there."
Ryles added that Paulo's presence significantly contributes to the team's performance when he plays regularly.
The Eels' season ended on a disappointing note after a close defeat against the Dragons, thanks to a two-point field goal from departing player Tyrell Sloan.
Reacting to the loss, Eels captain Mitchell Moses criticized the team, stating, "We got what we deserved. Came with a shit attitude and thought we'd get it dished up."
If Paulo continues with Parramatta, he could have the opportunity to play alongside fellow international Jarome Luai, who is set to join the Eels in a temporary arrangement for 2027.
