The Southern Orcas have disclosed that Scott Robertson, a former coach of the All Blacks, turned down their offer to lead the team in the NRL, citing significant rugby union-related pressure.
This news was first highlighted by the NZ Herald and later by The Daily Telegraph. Robertson, who amassed seven Super Rugby titles with the Canterbury Crusaders, chose not to accept a four-year head coach role as the Orcas aim to become the NRL's 20th franchise.
The Orcas were caught off guard by his choice, especially given Robertson's initial excitement regarding the position. A representative for Robertson confirmed his decision to decline the offer.
"Scott has let the Orcas know that he has declined their offer," the spokesman stated.
Chairman of the Orcas, Sir Graham Lowe, noted that Robertson likely faced considerable pressure when contemplating a shift to a different sport.
"'Razor' would have had a hell of a lot of pressure on him," Lowe said.
"In many ways, he was rugby union's 'anointed one' down there (on New Zealand's South Island).
"He's just loved by the public through his success in rugby union, his manner, and connection with the public. You'd struggle to find a more popular man in rugby union.
"Even though I could tell he was excited about the Orcas, he would have had a heap of pressure on.
