Schuster's Break: Tackling Life Off the Field

LeagueNews.co | Jason Patrick

Josh Schuster, the South Sydney Rabbitohs' five-eighth and second-rower, is set to take an indefinite break from rugby league for mental health reasons.

His management and the club confirmed the decision following ongoing challenges Schuster has faced, including injuries, form issues, and personal mental health struggles.

The former junior standout, who captained the New South Wales under-18 team and had a notable breakout season with the Manly Sea Eagles, has been unable to consistently play in recent years.

After leaving Manly in mid-2023 due to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract, he took the entirety of 2024 off from rugby league.

Schuster joined the Rabbitohs at the start of this year on a minimum wage deal but has only appeared in a few NSW Cup games.

Recent reports from News Corp indicated that he has decided to step away from the game to pursue professional help.

Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly expressed the club's commitment to supporting Schuster during this time, noting that he hasn't trained for over a week.
