Rugby Star Faces Truth About Identity

A man looks on during a rugby league match

Rugby league has a significant challenge ahead, as it now must match the incredible bravery demonstrated by Kane Evans.

For Evans, opening up about a deeply held secret was nothing short of a "worst nightmare".

He candidly shared, "I had three goals in life - to play NRL, to buy my parents a house and then I was going to top myself."

This statement encapsulates the pain of living in denial: "Because I was living in denial. From a young age, I knew that I'm gay but I went down every other avenue to build up these walls to be someone … to escape who I am."

Since recognizing his sexuality at 15, Evans has battled the conflict between his true self and the persona he maintained.

He recounted the struggles with substance abuse and shared that he has now been sober for 135 days and counting.

He candidly reflected on his experiences of being homeless, contemplating death, and the threats of blackmail during his career due to his sexuality.

Evans's memories are filled with shame and fear, juxtaposed with the hope of a brighter future, as he expressed, "my chains were broken," marking a new beginning.

At 34, he feels reborn, eager to share his truth: "They know, but I have to tell them. It has to come from my mouth."

He added, "Once I tell them I'll be free. Nothing can stop me after that."
