The Sydney Roosters have previously taken a premiership-era match to Japan, defeating Manly 34-30 in Tokyo after the 1996 season.
That Revolution Cup exhibition was played at Komazawa Stadium by the Roosters side coached by Arthur Beetson, during the Super League war.
More than three decades later, the Roosters and Brisbane Broncos are reportedly being considered for a Tokyo match to open the 2028 NRL season.
The Daily Telegraph reported that the Roosters had expressed interest in playing for premiership points in Japan, with Brisbane viewed as a prominent opponent.
Brisbane chief executive Donaghy said the club was receptive to the proposal "in principle".
"As a game we understand the value and we've seen that at the moment with the NFL bringing their game to Australia ... the significance of growing your audience and not standing still," Donaghy said.
"In principle, we understand it and agree with it (Global Round).
"If that's what the game and what Peter (V'landys) wants to do, I look forward to hearing more about it and understanding the full detail around what's actually involved."
NRL boss Peter V'landys has identified Miami, London, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong and Singapore as possible host cities for future international matches.
After the NRL secured a new $5.3 billion broadcast agreement, V'landys said last month, "Global Round will definitely be going ahead in 2028, no doubt about that."
