Brad Arthur, the head coach of Leeds Rhinos, has clarified that while Matthew Lodge has signed a contract with the team for the current season, discussions about a long-term arrangement are still open.
This week, it was announced that Lodge would join the Rhinos and compete for a position in the upcoming match after his release from the North Queensland Cowboys.
The experienced front-rower is expected to arrive in England shortly, allowing him a complete week to prepare before the Rhinos face off against the York Knights.
Following their defeat against the Leigh Leopards, additional depth in the front-row is essential for Arthur's team.
In a media briefing about Lodge's integration into the squad, Arthur outlined the club's intentions.
"I think at this stage it's Sunday. We'll give him a full week of training, and we'll see how he goes, but we didn't bring him over not to play," Arthur stated.
During negotiations with Lodge, Arthur recognized the player's ambition to compete in the following season and his desire for a longer commitment from the club.
"He was looking for an opportunity. He's playing for his future, and I like his motivation, and I like what he wants to do," Arthur emphasized.
