Sam Walker, a key player for the Sydney Roosters, is optimistic about extending his stay with the club beyond his current contract, as his agents aim to close a $1 million discrepancy in negotiations.
In recent weeks, reports suggested that Walker was presented with a four-year deal worth $5.6 million, which includes provisions for salary increases aligned with the salary cap changes.
While discussions regarding the contract are paused for the remainder of the season, Walker's representatives are targeting a more lucrative four-year agreement valued at $6.8 million, potentially boosting his annual salary to $1.7 million.
This season has been exceptional for the Sydney Roosters, who recently topped the ladder after a 14-6 victory against the Penrith Panthers on Thursday.
Walker burst onto the scene in 2021, stepping in for Luke Keary during his ACL injury, despite widespread skepticism about the team's chances of reaching the finals that year.
Since then, he has emerged as the star many anticipated, showcasing impressive performances this season and earning a spot on the Queensland Maroons for this year's Origin series following an injury to Tom Dearden.
Presently, Walker is under a contract that he signed after the 2023 season, having secured a three-year extension that will see him through until the end of the 2024 season as a free agent.
Earlier this week, coach Trent Robinson voiced his frustration regarding leaks from the negotiations.
"It's strange how it's come out… It's pretty clear how that comes out from management…, and that's pretty disappointing," Robinson remarked on Wednesday.
