Raiders Set Timeline with Long-Term Deal on Table for Smithies
The Canberra Raiders forward, Morgan Smithies, is currently in discussions about his long-term future, with a contract extension reportedly available until the end of 2029.
Since joining from the English Super League, Smithies has made a significant impact with the Raiders. His tough playing style both on the edge and in the middle has established him as a permanent member of Ricky Stuart's top 17, which clinched the minor premiership in 2025.
Despite being off-contract at the end of 2026, Smithies has been eligible to negotiate with other teams since November 1, leading to speculation about a possible departure from the Raiders.
However, indications suggest he is likely to re-sign, as The Canberra Times reported that a three-year extension through to the end of 2029 is in discussions.
Raiders CEO Don Furner noted that contract negotiations were temporarily paused while Smithies was overseas for the Rugby League World Cup and on holidays. He expressed eagerness to finalize a deal before the year's end.
"Morgan has just gotten back from overseas, so we're working through that one at the moment," Don Furner stated to The Canberra Times. "So hopefully that can get done. Obviously we don't want it to drag on much longer."
