Ponga's New Zealand debut follows rule change

Kalyn Ponga has previously suited up for the Maori All-Stars.

February's State of Origin eligibility changes opened the way for Kalyn Ponga to represent New Zealand while remaining eligible for Queensland or New South Wales.

The 28-year-old said he was grateful for the chance to play for his heritage. "I was just grateful that I can actually have this opportunity and represent my people. It's going to be a proud moment."

Ponga has previously played for the Maori All-Stars, but never at senior international level. "I've never played at the international level," he said at New Zealand's media day on Friday.

He has 13 Queensland caps and has represented the Junior Kangaroos and Australia at the 2019 Rugby League 9s World Cup, but did not break into Australia's senior Test team.

After captaining Newcastle to the 2026 NRL grand final and playing State of Origin for Queensland, Ponga sees the World Cup as the sport's peak. "Obviously it's the pinnacle of rugby league, and to do that now, I feel like the time is right in terms of my career."

He said his connection to his culture had grown stronger with age, influenced by his sister and family. His relatives may be moved when he performs the haka. "I know my family will probably have tears in their eyes. Obviously doing the haka and everything before the game, we'll be proud."

New Zealand's opening match is against Australia, and Ponga called the contest special. A possible fullback duel with James Tedesco would follow their recent grand final meeting, which Newcastle lost by one point.

Ponga said the quick shift from that defeat to the World Cup was part of the game: "You're constantly chasing what's ahead of you. You don't really have much time to reflect and sort of sit and stagnate for too long, you're on to the next goal."
