PNG Chiefs Spark Competition Concerns

Recent discussions have emerged concerning the potential competition posed by the PNG Chiefs following their acquisition of Jarome Luai.

In response to the chatter, Perth Bears CEO Anthony De Ceglie addressed concerns regarding their roster development, especially in light of their inability to attract a marquee player.

The ten-year agreement inked between governments for the PNG franchise provides them the opportunity to offer tax-free salaries.

Notably, Alex Johnston's clause, which permits negotiations prior to November 1, has given the Chiefs an advantage in the transfer market ahead of their 2028 competition entry.

Earlier this year, Perth's General Manager of Football, David Sharpe APM OAM, departed the club following ongoing conflicts with Anthony De Ceglie over alignment, communication, and the club's future direction.

During a recent appearance on NRL360, De Ceglie minimized concerns regarding perceived inequities within the organization.

"We can't let the external noise distract us from the external KPIs," stated De Ceglie.

"I understand the comparisons, but I keep reminding everyone that PNG aren't playing next year. We have 17 other teams to worry about next season."

"I think PNG is a comparison, but it's not an apples-for-apples comparison, and for us, we're sticking to the mantra to sign the right players for the right reasons."
