PNG Chiefs eye early Voro move

The PNG Chiefs' plans to build a local talent pathway could begin with Gairo Voro, who is reportedly being considered for an early move to feeder club the Hunters.

Voro is off contract with the London Broncos and has a Chiefs development deal for 2028.

His World Cup performances for Papua New Guinea have strengthened the case for bringing him back sooner.

A place in the Chiefs' Top 30 would make him the first homegrown player in their inaugural NRL squad.

The club has recruited established players, including former Penrith premiership winner Jarome Luai, but developing local players will be important to sustaining its Port Moresby roster.

Voro, a five-eighth compared with Luai for his style and attacking influence, scored in Papua New Guinea's 42-18 opening win over Lebanon.

He also recorded a try assist and two line breaks, then continued to offer stability in attack and defence against Samoa, despite the Kumuls' loss.

A Hunters stint could support his development at home and strengthen his bid for an NRL opportunity before the Chiefs' first season.

The move would be a setback for London, which signed Voro alongside fellow Papua New Guinean prospects Morea Morea and Finley Glare.

Morea and Glare are expected to stay in London for 2027, while also seeking promotion to the Chiefs' Top 30.
