The Perth Bears are making headlines with their latest acquisition, securing the highly-regarded Mason Barber on a three-year contract that will begin in 2027.
A product of the North Queensland Cowboys development program, Barber is also a proud alumnus of the renowned Keebra Park State High School, where he earned Australian Schoolboys recognition in 2024.
This promising 19-year-old has already made a mark, featuring in 10 matches for the Mackay Cutters this season, showcasing his talent with 36 tackle breaks, six assists for tries, and an impressive average of 119 metres per game.
Originally from northern New Zealand, Barber faced a challenging period away from the field due to a serious shoulder injury in 2024 but has made a remarkable comeback, demonstrating exceptional skill with the Cowboys' feeder club.
Joining forces with Apa Twidle, Barber is anticipated to contribute significantly to the Bears' long-term strategy, creating a formidable duo on the field.
His natural athleticism, speed, and strength were on display during this year's NRL preseason trials while playing fullback for the Cowboys. Coach Mal Meninga is optimistic about Barber's transition to Western Australia, expecting him to make an immediate impact.
