Nathan Cleary's road to recovery is looking promising, with the Panthers staying firm in their decision not to rush back their star playmaker.

The Blue's chances of having him on the field for State of Origin this year are as likely as a snowball's chance in hell, but the Panthers have their sights set on a round 20 return against the Dolphins next month.

Cleary has been sidelined since suffering a grade 2 hamstring tear in round 10, only adding to his injury woes after a similar setback earlier in the season.

Despite this setback, the triple premiership winner has only managed to make five appearances this year, after his heroic grand final performance last season.

The Panthers, however, have managed to maintain their defensive dominance in his absence, sitting pretty in second place on the ladder.

Originally expected to miss eight weeks, Cleary's return date has been pushed back to their July 21 clash at home, ruling him out of any last-minute heroes for Origin III.

Coach Ivan Cleary remains cautiously optimistic about his star player's progress, hoping for a swift return after their upcoming bye week.

"We're keeping the fingers crossed for his return after the bye," said Cleary.

"His rehab is going well, and we're hoping he can keep up the good work.

It's all about taking it one game at a time, and we can't wait to have him back on the field."
