Panthers under fire for World Club Challenge snub as NRL urged to intervene
In a move that has ruffled feathers and sparked controversy, Penrith has come under heavy fire for their decision to pull out of the prestigious World Club Challenge in 2025.
Rugby League fans are up in arms over the Panthers' announcement, with many calling for the NRL to step in and intervene.
The annual clash between the NRL champions and the UK Super League champions has been left in limbo, with Wigan refusing to travel to Australia if they emerge victorious in the Super League grand final.
Despite tentative plans for the match to be held on February 15 next year, Penrith CEO Brian Fletcher made it clear that the Panthers will not be participating.
Citing concerns over player fatigue and a packed international schedule, Fletcher declared that the timing of the World Club Challenge is simply not feasible for his team.
Instead, the Panthers are set to kick off their NRL campaign in Las Vegas on March 2, giving them little time to prepare for the World Club Challenge just two weeks prior.
With their sights set on facing Cronulla in the States, Penrith is adamant about being in America at least 10 days before their clash.
As backlash continues to mount, the rugby league community eagerly awaits to see if the NRL will step in and resolve the situation.
Stay tuned for more twists and turns as this saga unfolds.
