The NRL has indicated its goal to expand the league beyond 20 teams and is seriously contemplating an American-style conference framework.
Next season, the Perth Bears will join as the 18th team, with the PNG Chiefs set to enter in 2025. Reports have uncovered a hidden clause in the $5.3 billion broadcast agreement that imposes a $20 million annual deduction-totalling up to $120 million-if a 20th team isn't added by 2029.
Due to this substantial financial motivation, the league is eager to name the club receiving the 20th license by Christmas. Three consortiums from New Zealand-Christchurch, Hamilton, and Wellington-are competing for this position, alongside bids from Queensland's Ipswich and Central Queensland.
Nonetheless, there's a possibility that unsuccessful bids this time could be revisited in the future. NRL executive chair Peter V'landys has indicated that extending the competition to 22 teams is also on the table.
