Newcastle's Ponga could miss World Cup opener

‘I’d hate to see him ruled out’: Ponga facing nervous World Cup wait

Kalyn Ponga's tackle on Victor Radley in Sunday's NRL grand final could affect his availability for the World Cup opener.

The Newcastle star was placed on report for a high tackle, and a post-match review could result in a fine and/or suspension.

The tournament starts October 15, with selections yet to be confirmed.

Former Warrior and Sport Nation host Blake Ayshford also praised Naufahu Whyte's grand-final performance.

Ayshford said he would regret Ponga missing a major match-up: "So for me, I'd hate to see him ruled out because that's going to be one of the biggest clashes in the world cup or the biggest clash."

He described Australia-New Zealand as a preview of the likely final.

Ayshford rated Ponga among rugby league's best players over the previous month and a half, despite Nathan Cleary winning the season's Dally M award.
