Ponga's tears after Newcastle's 22-14 win over Penrith reflected the importance of the club's grand-final place.
At the siren, he embraced Sandon Smith, interrupting the half's preparation for a shot at goal.
"It was just nine years of work at this club, bottled up into Sandon and taking that intercept," Ponga told AAP.
"It all hit me at once."
Now 28, Ponga will captain the Knights against Sydney Roosters on Sunday and is contracted through 2030 after signing in April.
He conceded doubts about his commitment had sometimes been justified by problems around the club, but said, "I've always wanted to win here."
Timana Tahu told AAP Ponga "deserves to win" after nine years under pressure; coach Justin Holbrook has eased his load with a balanced attack.
Ponga said teammates and staff now let him focus on his role, adding, "I've been here for so long, and I'm definitely proud I stayed."
