Newcastle teen McKay rises through grades

Knights lock in teenage gun as rising star earns major contract reward

Newcastle is also monitoring Kade McKay's twin, Jett, whose progress as a five-eighth was disrupted by a knee injury this year.

Despite the setback delaying his route to a deal like his brother's, Jett is expected to receive a contract upgrade as the Knights seek to retain him long term.

Their older brother, Zahn, is already playing in Newcastle's Jersey Flegg side.

Kade, a Wyong Roos and Hunter Sports High product, has earned an upgrade from his junior contract after developing throughout the year.

Still in Year 11, he has played at Jersey Flegg level and is progressing through the club's junior system.

He can play in the second row or at centre and can also kick goals.

Kade was player of the match in the Knights' Harold Matthews Grand Final earlier this year.

He represented NSW City under-16s last year and recently scored an aerial try in the under-17s Koori Knockout Grand Final.

Further progress and representative honours could put him in contention for a Top 30 contract.

Hunter Sports High has produced several Knights, including current NRL player Phoenix Crossland.
