Knights captain Kalyn Ponga and teammate Bradman Best were among the players who sent messages of support to injured fans on Saturday afternoon.

The messages followed an Instagram update about three people hurt when a car struck fans gathered beside the road in Wallsend that morning.

Multiple people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Knights chief executive Peter Parr issued a statement ahead of the club's Sunday night grand final against the Roosters, saying the injured were on the players' minds.

"the thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with everyone who has been injured, their families and loved ones, and everyone who witnessed what occurred," Parr said.

The incident disrupted a planned farewell for the team, with last-minute changes preventing thousands of fans from cheering the players as they departed for Sydney.

"What was meant to be a special morning for the community, thousands of Novocastrians coming together to farewell the team and show their support ahead of the Grand Final, has understandably turned into a distressing morning," Parr added.

He thanked supporters for their turnout and said the scenes showed the club's importance to Newcastle.

"Newcastle is a strong community. We have seen that strength throughout this week, and today we need to draw on it again with compassion, care and support for those who need it most."

Ponga wrote, "All the best with recovery mate! The team and community are with yas ❤️💙," while Best posted, "You're a soldier brother. Prayers up for a speedy recovery ❤️."
