Newcastle Knights' bid may revive Silverchair reunion

Newcastle Knights v Illawarra Steelers | Round 8, 1997 | Condensed Match | NRL

Silverchair have not performed together since 2010, but a proposed NRL grand final appearance brought the Newcastle band close to reuniting.

Matty and Andrew Johns pushed for the group to play if the Knights reached the decider, attracting strong support from fans.

On Nine's Freddy and the Eighth, Joey Johns said, "We're trying to get Silverchair to play, but I can't kidnap Daniel again," recalling singer Daniel Johns joining the Knights' 1997 celebrations at age 15.

He imagined the band performing before the match: "Could you imagine Silverchair playing 15 minutes before kick-off? You'd have 75,000 Novocastrians singing along."

Drummer Ben Gillies and bassist Chris Joannou were reportedly willing, but Daniel was hesitant, despite appreciating the public support and backing the Knights. After years away from the stage, he felt rusty.

Matthew Johns told SEN the reunion "almost happened" and said Gillies and Joannou were keen, but there was not enough time to organise it. Manager John Watson warned a rushed return could damage the band's reputation, saying a comeback needed to be significant.

The NRL still lacked a headline performer after Tones and I withdrew, while Peter V'landys continued to hint at a surprise act.

Matthew Johns said the grand-final buzz might help bring the band back together. He welcomed Daniel's statement: "for the first time in ages, the three of us actually agree wholeheartedly on something - Go the Knights!"
