PNG Chiefs face fan-behaviour concerns

PNG Chiefs BSP Announcement - PNG Chiefs

Australia's Prime Minister's XIII will face Papua New Guinea this weekend in its annual match, ahead of the Chiefs' planned 2028 entry.

Footage of a grandstand brawl at Santos National Stadium, the Chiefs' future home, has raised concerns about player welfare and crowd behaviour.

The club faces a challenge attracting high-profile players from Australia to Port Moresby's different socioeconomic environment.

Former Kumuls representative David Mead, who played 15 Tests, said locals must prepare for NRL games in 2028.

"They will need a lot of education," Mead told News Corp.

Mead said, "There is no doubt the players are going to be intimidated if that type of behaviour is occurring."

He also said, "It's a different culture and environment and there is also a language barrier. Tok Pisin (pidgin) is similar to English, but the barrier hasn't been spoken about much."

Mead said, "The Chiefs will have to educate their fans about how to behave at NRL games."

He added, "They will have to do a lot of work on making sure security is up to high standards and crowd behaviour is manageable."
