New Zealand's Nicoll-Klokstad faces Cook Islands past

Kiwi-Kuki CNK: 'I love every part of my heritage'

New Zealand's 30-0 defeat of Australia in the 2023 Pacific Championships showed Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad what the Kiwis could achieve, but his international ambition began with the 2008 World Cup.

"I feel like I've been dreaming about it since 2008 when I watched the boys lift that cup," he said.

Nicoll-Klokstad will face the Cook Islands, his first international team, when he starts in the centres for New Zealand at the World Cup.

The 31-year-old replaces Dane Gagai, with his ability to cover several backline positions earning him another opportunity.

He has played on the wing six times for the Warriors in 2026, including in both finals, and is set to play his 20th Test.

After making his Cook Islands debut in 2015, he played three Tests for them before representing New Zealand in 16 Tests.

The Cook Islands represent his mother's side of the family, making the match especially meaningful.

"That's home away from home for me," he said.

He also said, "I love both my nations. Growing up, I played and actually started my international career with the Cook Islands."

Although he could have continued playing for the Cook Islands, he prioritised representing New Zealand.

"I'm proud Cook Island, Maori, Norwegian. I love every part of my heritage and although I'll be wearing the black and white jersey, I'll still be representing my mum, my nan, my family and whanau still in the Cook Islands," he said.
