New Zealand's Leota starting debate

NRL Rd 1 - Panthers v Sea Eagles

Joseph Tapine has been named at lock rather than prop as New Zealand prepare to open their Rugby League World Cup campaign against Australia.

The choice leaves Moses Leota in the starting front row alongside James Fisher-Harris, his former Penrith Panthers teammate.

Leota's forceful carries and defence could help the Kiwis control the middle and withstand Australia's early pressure.

Years together at Penrith have given Leota and Fisher-Harris shared timing and defensive understanding, offering New Zealand cohesion from the outset.

Leota can also attract multiple defenders, create space for offloads and generate momentum through quick play-the-balls.

But his power may be more effective against tiring opponents, and starting him removes a potential impact player from the bench.

Leota is a high-intensity player, so coach Stacey Jones will need to manage his time on the field carefully.

Tapine's footwork and ability to link with the halves could suit him at lock, where he has room to choose when to run or offload.

With Tapine, Leota and Fisher-Harris all starting, Jones can deploy three starting-calibre forwards to pressure Australia early.
