New Zealand await Ponga fitness call

Phoenix Crossland has completed his four-game suspension and could return alongside Kalyn Ponga for New Zealand's World Cup semi-final against Tonga.

Both Newcastle players are on the extended bench for Saturday night's match at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Ponga broke his arm during New Zealand's opening 24-22 loss to Australia, playing more than 20 minutes injured before surgery aimed at enabling a finals return.

Newcastle centre Dane Gagai, who played with Ponga in the Knights' 19-18 NRL grand final defeat a month ago, said Ponga's fitness would depend on medical checks.

"He won't put himself before the team but we'd obviously love to have him out there," Gagai said.

Crossland's suspension followed a hip-drop tackle that broke Nathan Cleary's ankle in Newcastle's preliminary final win over Penrith. Gagai welcomed the possibility of playing with Crossland again, praising his energy and saying he was "super happy for him."
