Kangaroos' Grant urges shorter NRL season

France and the Cook Islands were the only teams to finish the World Cup without a win, a concern Australia hooker Harry Grant linked to the need for more international fixtures.

Grant wants the NRL season shortened to create a larger end-of-year window for Test matches and strengthen the international game.

He said: "Maybe we could shorten the season, then you have a World Cup where everyone can play footy and you have your conversations off the back of that,"

Grant said a bigger representative window could include Origin, Australia, Samoa and Tonga.

Contract discussions have distracted from the tournament, with almost half of Kevin Walters' Australia squad entering the final 12 months of their NRL deals on November 1.

Sam Walker's Roosters contract breakdown has raised questions about Kangaroos halves Tom Dearden and Ethan Strange, while Jack Bostock and Bradman Best have faced speculation before Sunday's semi-final against Samoa.

Grant also questioned how often France and the Cook Islands play together between World Cups.

He said: "I don't know how many games France or the Cook Islands get to play together since the last World Cup (in 2022)."

Grant said New Zealand, Tonga and Samoa could also benefit from more opportunities to play outside World Cups.
