As Jeremiah Nanai heads towards his contract's conclusion with North Queensland in 2027, coach Todd Payten has acknowledged the possibility that the young back-rower may explore options with rival teams.
Negotiations can begin on November 1, unless Nanai secures a new deal with the Cowboys by that date. Payten expressed skepticism about reaching an agreement in time, saying, "I'd love it to happen before November 1, but I just understand how the game works and how his manager works."
At just 23 years old, Nanai is considered one of the premier second-row players in the NRL, although this season has been hampered by injuries. Nevertheless, he remains crucial for North Queensland, especially as they part ways with experienced back-rower John Bateman and might also lose Kai O'Donnell to the Super League.
On his best days, Nanai's attacking prowess and aerial skills set him apart. Payten remarked, "He's super important ... We know how good a team he makes us when he's on the park." The upcoming off-season is expected to create tension as the Cowboys aim to retain him.
