Nanai Makes Strong Case for Origin Return

The spotlight on the Queensland Maroons selection once again shines on Jeremiah Nanai, who has made a compelling case for his return to representative football.

In the recent 26-12 victory against the Penrith Panthers, the Cowboys player showcased his exceptional skills by scoring two tries, reminding Maroons coach Billy Slater of the attributes that led to his eight previous State of Origin selections.

From the very start of the match, the Cowboys dominated, consistently challenging the Panthers and effectively neutralizing their star players.

Throughout 2026, Nanai has faced a tough battle with a shoulder injury that originated during the Pacific Championships last year while playing for Samoa.

This injury resulted in dislocation and subsequent reconstructive surgery, sidelining him for a significant period.

He made his comeback in early May, but unfortunately, in just his second game back, he re-injured the same shoulder.

Fortunately, medical scans showed that the injury was not as severe as anticipated, enabling him to shine in his last two appearances, which are proving vital for his bid for an Origin spot.

"The boys have been outstanding, Queensland, and I'm getting itchy feet just watching them and supporting them from home," Nanai shared with the NewsWire.

"Obviously I want to be in the arena again and pull that jersey on, it means a lot."

"If I get the call-up, we'll see, but I've just got to focus on what I'm doing here. Hopefully if I get that call-up I'll take it with both hands and make sure I get the job done."
