The Tonga-Samoa Test averaged 1.5 million television viewers, a record for a non-Kangaroos rugby league match.
CommBank Stadium was 98 per cent full for Sunday night's game.
Tonga beat Samoa 20-18, with Addin Fonua-Blake scoring the winning try in the 73rd minute.
The match was hailed as one of the greatest sporting experiences, prompting calls for an international State of Origin-style contest between the teams.
Former NRL player Alex McKinnion, holidaying in Honolulu, suggested staging the fixture in Hawaii.
The Parramatta supporter gathering before kick-off sparked his idea. "It was nuts and absolutely incredible - they literally took over the main street," McKinnion told The Daily Telegraph.
He added: "That was literally my first thought when I saw all the cars and flags - play Samoa and Tonga here in Hawaii."
McKinnion proposed a Halloween game, saying the occasion is popular in Hawaii and the match could attract a large crowd and succeed.
