The Queensland Maroons have officially announced their roster for the first match of the 2026 State of Origin series.
A major highlight is the decision to exclude Reece Walsh from the lineup, a significant move by coach Billy Slater.
Despite Walsh's commendable performances that led the Broncos to last year's premiership and his involvement in the Kangaroos during the Ashes, a less-than-stellar start to 2026 has caused Slater to bring back Kalyn Ponga.
While there were speculations over the weekend that Ponga would play at halfback, Slater opted for Sam Walker to make his debut in place of the injured Tom Dearden.
In the backline, Valentine Holmes has been left out, joining Xavier Coates and Murray Taulagi on the sidelines due to injuries.
Robert Toia and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow will occupy the center positions, while Selwyn Cobbo returns on one wing and Jojo Fifita is set to make his debut on the opposite side.
Thomas Flegler is back for Queensland after a lengthy injury absence, teaming up with Tino Fa'asuamaleaui in the front row, while Max Plath will step into the lock position.
On the bench, Lindsay Collins, Patrick Carrigan, and retained Trent Loiero will support the starting lineup.
Reuben Cotter and Kurt Capewell will resume their roles as starting second-rowers with New Zealand's Briton Nikora joining them.
Gehamat Shibasaki and Ezra Mam complete the bench, with Kulikefu Finefeuiaki surprisingly named as the 20th man.
