The St George Illawarra Dragons have made a decision regarding Luciano Leilua's request for an early release.
The talented forward will remain with the club until the conclusion of the 2026 NRL season.
Leilua had recently requested a drop back to the NSW Cup after not receiving significant playing time in the NRL.
However, he made a notable impact in his return to reserve grade with a standout performance, which led to his further request for an immediate release.
With the NRL's player movement deadline being June 30, it would have required quick action on Leilua's part to facilitate a departure before the season's end.
Although he began the year in excellent form while focusing on his future, Leilua now faces the possibility of being affected by the Dragons' roster changes, which involve five new signings already confirmed.
The club has secured players like Scott Drinkwater, Luke Metcalf, Phillip Sami, Keaon Koloamatangi, and Connor Watson for the 2027 season.
Additionally, they are reportedly interested in Shawn Blore, who is leaving the Melbourne Storm.
With a promising lineup of young forwards also ready for first grade, including Toby and Ryan Couchman, Hamish Stewart, Dylan Egan, Loko Pasifiki Tonga, and Jacob Halangahu, the Dragons have limited roster space.
Damien Cook's departure has been confirmed, and the club has informed centre Moses Suli that he is free to pursue other opportunities.
Speculation continues surrounding the futures of Clint Gutherson, Valentine Holmes, and Blake Lawrie as well.
Without a permanent coach for 2027, following Shane Flanagan's earlier dismissal, the Red V will rely on their new signings and young talent, leaving no opportunities for Leilua.
"For sure, I would love to (remain at the Dragons). I just let my manager handle all that but all I can do is just go out there and play good footy," Leilua stated in an interview last week.
