Lebanon's World Cup future in doubt

The International Rugby League reduced Lebanon from full member to affiliate status in 2024, putting its future World Cup eligibility in doubt.

Only full members that meet governance and domestic participation standards for men's, women's and youth Rugby League can compete at World Cups.

Lebanon qualified automatically for the 2026 tournament after reaching the quarter-finals in 2022 under coach Michael Cheika.

But its match against France could be the Cedars' last World Cup appearance for the foreseeable future, as conflict continues to limit the sport in Lebanon.

IRL chair Troy Grant told AAP that Lebanon faced a difficult operating environment, although its governance had improved.

"There's been some concessions for that but in recent years, there's been a massive improvement in the governance arrangements for Lebanon," Grant said.

"Those based domestically are being supported by a really good group based in Australia."

Lebanon played only one Test between the 2022 World Cup and this year's tournament: against Italy in Sydney.

Cheika selected no players from Lebanon's domestic competition, relying instead on ancestry-qualified players supported by Australia's Lebanese diaspora.

Grant said conflict had worsened since Lebanon qualified and restricted the team's playing time, making it difficult to maintain player numbers.

"If you're not playing, it's very hard to have full membership status," he said.

The IRL is working with Lebanon, as it has with Ireland and Scotland after their domestic games declined, to help them retain full membership and World Cup eligibility.
