Lebanon captain Twal leans on passion

Lebanon reached the quarter-finals at both the 2017 and 2022 World Cups, and Alex Twal is targeting a first semi-final appearance.

The Wests Tigers player of the year will captain the Cedars for the first time, after missing the 2022 tournament through injury.

Lebanon's campaign begins against the PNG Kumuls in Port Moresby on Saturday, a must-win opener.

The Cedars will be without injured five-eighth Adam Doueihi and Mitchell Moses, who is playing for Australia.

Twal last represented Lebanon at the 2017 World Cup and says playing for his heritage matters deeply.

"I can't wait for the opportunity to represent my heritage and roots on my mum's side. She was born in Lebanon. We are very proud people."

At Monday's fan day and open training at Langlands Park, head coach Michael Cheika was joined by incoming NSW Blues coach Matt King, Robbie Farah, former Wallabies half Will Genia and kicking coach Nick Davis, a 2005 AFL premiership winner with the Sydney Swans.

"It is very humbling," Twal told AAP about the coaching group.

Farah said Twal had earned the captaincy through his development as a leader and outstanding season for the Tigers.

Twal will lead the pack alongside Jaxson Rahme and James Roumanos.

"We love the country and we love the people, so this is an opportunity for us to have a positive impact on the culture. Aggression is what we will bring, but playing with passion is very important for us."

After being sin-binned for shoving Jaeman Salmon in the face during a heated round 20 match, Twal said he regretted the act and held no grudge.

"I regret what I did because that is not the way to carry on when you are on a football field," Twal said.
