Australia's big World Cup selection calls

Teddy versus Reece: The battle to be Australia’s World Cup No.1

Kalyn Ponga will remain at fullback for New Zealand, despite speculation he could move into the halves to make room for another option at No. 1.

The Kangaroos and Kiwis meet on Thursday night in a clash between tournament favourites.

Australia coach Kevin Walters named Reece Walsh at fullback and Mitchell Moses at halfback, ahead of James Tedesco and Sam Walker.

Their selection does not necessarily make Walsh and Moses first-choice players: Tedesco and Walker are carrying niggles, and Australia can afford to lose this match while remaining favourites against Fiji and the Cook Islands.

Walters will still want his side to start strongly against New Zealand's formidable pack.

Australia's starting line-up includes Jack Bostock, Latrell Mitchell, Kotoni Staggs, Tom Trbojevic, Cameron Munster, Patrick Carrigan, Harry Grant, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Jacob Preston, Liam Martin and captain Isaah Yeo.

Tom Dearden, Cameron Murray, Reuben Cotter and Keaon Koloamatangi make up the bench; Bradman Best and Tedesco are among the reserves.

Blayke Brailey is also in the reserves, a surprise after being expected to provide cover for Grant. Dearden could fill in at hooker if Grant plays the full 80 minutes.

New Zealand's starting side features Ponga, Jamayne Isaako, Dane Gagai, Casey McLean, Ronaldo Mulitalo, Kodi Nikorima, Jahrome Hughes, captain James Fisher-Harris, Jeremy Marshall-King, Moses Leota, Isaiah Papali'i, Briton Nikora and Joseph Tapine.

Erin Clark, recently named lock forward of the year at the Dally M awards, misses a starting spot. Fisher-Harris and Leota take the prop positions, while Tapine is named at lock.

That selection points to a straightforward plan: New Zealand will look to overpower Australia through the middle.
