Knights Boosted by Young's Early Plea Amid Injury Woes

Dom Young.

Newcastle has received a significant boost to their premiership ambitions with Dom Young cleared to participate in their NRL finals series.

Young was temporarily sent off after a controversial hip-drop tackle that resulted in Manly's Tolu Koula suffering a syndesmosis injury during their unexpected 44-24 defeat on Saturday.

The Knights were anxious about Young's availability for the finals, especially with Dylan Brown (knee) and Dylan Lucas (ankle) already sidelined.

After Newcastle's hopes for a home final took a hit, the match review committee provided some relief by imposing just a one-game suspension for Young's grade-two offence, should he opt for an early plea.

While he will miss the crucial game against the Warriors next Sunday, the Knights have a bye in round 27, meaning he will be eligible for the first week of the finals.

In other news for the Knights, forward Tyson Frizell received a one-game suspension for dangerous contact against Manly's Tom Trbojevic.

Koula, on the other hand, will undergo scans, with the club optimistic that he has sustained only a grade-two syndesmosis tear, potentially sidelining him for a few weeks.

Manly may also see Taniela Paseka (knee) and Ethan Bullemor (concussion) return for their matchup against St George Illawarra on Friday, keeping their finals hopes alive.

This revival would significantly benefit the Sea Eagles' pack, who have been missing all four of their top front-row options for the last three weeks.

In contrast, the Warriors faced disappointing news, as coach Andrew Webster confirmed winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak will require surgery for his broken collarbone.

This injury occurred when the 31-year-old fell hard trying to score during their 45-26 triumph over South Sydney.

Watene-Zelezniak's operation is scheduled for Monday, and Webster is hopeful he can still contribute in the finals.

"People probably don't realise, Dallin did it in the first half," Webster revealed to Newstalk ZB.

"He kept running the football, wincing and going back to the wing in pain.

"At halftime, he took his jersey off to try and get it treated, and I saw him try and put it back on, and it wasn't a nice look."

Meanwhile, Canterbury faced a setback in their quest for a top-eight finish as winger Jonathan Sua received a one-game suspension for a high-drop tackle during their 44-14 victory against the Dragons.

The Bulldogs must win their last two matches against Penrith and Brisbane if they hope to have any shot at the finals.
