As the 2026 Rugby League World Cup approaches, New Zealand has disclosed an impressive extended squad that promises to challenge their opponents, notably Australia.
Among the standout selections in coach Stacey Jones' lineup is Cooper Clarke, a promising forward from the Storm who embraces his Māori heritage despite being born in Campbelltown. Also included is Rabbitohs hooker Brandon Smith, returning to the international arena after last competing for New Zealand in 2022. Notably, Queensland's Kalyn Ponga has opted to represent the Kiwis after previously holding allegiance to the Kangaroos, without ever playing a senior international match for them.
The squad also includes players with potential eligibility dilemmas. Thomas Mikaele and Francis Manuleleua are both options for Toa Samoa, while Fonua Pole and Salesi Foketi could play for Tonga.
The quality of the Kiwi roster is further underscored by the fact that 27 of the players are set to compete in this weekend's NRL finals.
New Zealand is placed in Group A and will kickoff their World Cup journey against Australia, the co-host, on October 15 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. Subsequent matches include face-offs with the Cook Islands in Christchurch and Fiji on the Gold Coast.
The Kiwis had a tough exit in the semi-finals of the last World Cup, losing to Australia by a narrow 16-14 margin. They have previously triumphed in the tournament, famously winning the 2008 final against Australia with a stunning 34-20 result at Suncorp Stadium.
