Eliesa Katoa, the second-rower for Melbourne Storm, has been officially ruled out for the entire 2026 NRL season as he continues to recover from head injuries sustained while playing for Tonga in the Pacific Championships.

Katoa, who was a member of the Dally M team of the year, had an outstanding 2025 season, contributing to the Storm's journey to the grand final for the second consecutive year. However, during a match against New Zealand, he sustained three head impacts, including one during the warm-up.

Following the injuries, Katoa underwent surgery to remove a bleed on his brain, leading to conversations surrounding the possibility of retirement. While the Melbourne Storm has not suggested this outcome, CEO Justin Rodski emphasized that there is currently no timeline for Katoa's return and confirmed that he would be unavailable throughout 2026.

"In consultation with the doctor and neuro specialists, Eli will not return to training this pre-season and won't be available for the 2026 season," Rodski stated.

He added, "He has a long road ahead in his recovery, and his focus will be on returning to full health before considering any form of return to training." Rodski also expressed the team's solidarity with Katoa, stating, "Eli is a much-loved and respected member of the team and club. The Storm Family will rally around him and support him through his recovery."
