Katoa Aims to Enhance Running Game in Finals

Isaiya Katoa, halfback for the Dolphins, is eager to enhance his running game in the finals, following insights from rugby league star Cooper Cronk on elevating his playmaking abilities.

Katoa admires Nathan Cleary and seeks to replicate the Penrith star's successful style, particularly his running impact, which became evident as Cleary significantly improved his average running meters over the past six years.

As the Dolphins prepare for their qualifying final against the Warriors in Auckland, Katoa's contribution will be pivotal. Cleary's transition from an average of 78 running meters early in his career to 110 meters recently highlights the effectiveness of a running halfback.

"I have spoken to Cooper Cronk over the course of the year," Katoa said. "A big part of that is my running game… keeping defenders honest." He recognizes the importance of keeping the defense guessing, which in turn enhances both his running and playmaking capabilities.

Having trained with the Panthers as a teen, Katoa learned from Cleary's commitment to refining his skills, particularly how Cleary would stay late after training. Watching Cronk's aggressive approach to the line further informs Katoa's development.

"I am such a footy head. I am constantly sitting at home and watching footy… watching great players like Cooper Cronk," he noted. Katoa emphasizes the connection between running and passing, aspiring to integrate that element more into his game.

Katoa's experiences in the NRL and with the NSW Origin squad have further solidified valuable lessons. He observed Cleary's active engagement during high-pressure moments, learning that constant involvement is crucial.

As the Dolphins brace for their first finals match, Katoa acknowledges the challenge ahead. "We have got to treat (Saturday's final) as walking towards the challenge of the Warriors," he asserted, prepared to embrace the high stakes and the crowd's intensity.
